Is it possible to build your muscles without using weights? Find out what your options are and how far you can go in exercising in a “weightless” environment. Whether you build muscles with weights such as dumbbells or barbells, or without them, in order to build muscle effectively you need to be working against some sort of resistance. Dumbbells and barbells provide this resistance through gravity. Gravity pulls them down towards the floor, while you make your muscles work by lifting these weights in the opposite direction. Cable extensions work on the same principle allowing you to pull down on a cable running over a pulley and attached to a weight at the other end.

So if you want to build muscle without these weights, you will need to find something to replace them. If you do push-ups on the floor for example, it is the weight of your body that makes your chest muscles work as you push against the floor with your hands to raise and lower your body. The same thing happens if you do chin-ups. You are pulling against the chin-up bar to raise your body against gravity.

For exercises truly without either external weights or your body weight, you can use rubber strips where the resistance is in the elasticity of the strip when you extend it. Strips are available in different strengths for the same length, so it is possible to modulate the resistance and therefore the amount of force you need to use.

While these possibilities exist and in many cases you can improvise with everyday items to do different muscle building exercises, it becomes more difficult to reach higher levels of body-building performance without weights like barbells or equipment such as bodybuilding presses. This is not to say that you have to make an investment yourself as you may well have a body building club close to you giving you access to such equipment for a relatively modest fee.
