- Mats
The first accessory for Pilates is an exercise mat, which is solely for comfort. Doing Pilates on your hardwood floor, or even your carpet, can be uncomfortable and make the experience much less enjoyable. Having mats can also protect you from having any types of injuries. Mats are fairly cheap and extremely simple to use making it easy on beginners. - Exercise balls
Exercise balls allow you to do an array of different exercises. Exercise balls will add to your experience and broaden the amount of exercises and muscles that you can work out. Much like mats, they are fairly cheap considering the amount of use you can get out of them. And you can use them right on top of your mat, as they are mobile and light to move around. - Resistance bands
Resistance bands are great accessories for Pilates because they allow you to do different kinds of stretches at different resistances. There are several different kinds of bands on the market to choose from, and many times you can purchase a variety pack with different resistances. Generally there are three different levels, going from easy to medium to hard. You may also see the levels in numeral increments from 55 to 65 to 75. - Reformers
Reformers are designed to work on the principle of resistance training much like resistance bands. This is more of a piece of equipment than it is an actual accessory for Pilates as it adds springs and ropes to a machine. Many people accommodate reformers to their home gym so that they can mechanically gain body strength. The one downside with reformers is that they can be quite expensive, which is why many people stick with resistance bands or springs. But you will have many more options with reformers.
While there is not a need for accessories for Pilates, they can certainly enhance the overall workout. Whether it is purchasing mats for comfort and increased safety or purchasing resistance bands and exercise balls, you can add a lot to your overall workout with these accessories. And because of how small many of the accessories are, you will finally be able to do Pilates from the comfort of your own home.
